Tell your members of Congress we need COVID-19 relief and MFP funding now!
Congressional efforts to pass a coronavirus relief package together with a must-pass government funding bill have been gaining momentum. The current government funding bill, which includes funding for the Money Follows the Person (MFP) program, is set to expire December 18. It’s critical that Congress pass urgently needed COVID-19 relief, and the needs of disabled people must be addressed in the legislation.
A bipartisan group of Senators and Representatives have developed a COVID-19 relief proposal. While bill text for the entire bill is not public yet, it appears from a publicly-released framework that it will include some important priorities for the disability community.
That proposal includes dedicated funding for long-term services and supports. This funding can be used for home and community-based services (HCBS) that are desperately needed to help disabled people and older adults remain safely in their homes rather than being forced into nursing homes and other congregate settings, which have had serious COVID-19 outbreaks.
Republicans are facing pressure to remove this critical funding from the bill so it’s urgent that we push them to keep it. It is especially important to contact the Republican leadership, members of the Appropriations Committee, and negotiators on the bipartisan proposal listed here.
It is still uncertain what the final budget bill will look like, but what is certain is that alongside HCBS funding, MFP can save lives during this pandemic. MFP has helped over 91,000 disabled people and older adults transition from congregate settings, which have been especially hard hit by COVID-19, back to the community. Many states have had to slow or completely shut down their MFP programs because of the uncertainty of continued short term funding extensions from Congress, so we need to push for long term funding now!
Please take a moment now to email your members of Congress! It’s important that they hear from us about why disability priorities matter! You can also find more information about contacting your members of Congress on our advocacy page.
